This paper examines changes in the living arrangements of American children between 1999 and 2001, and discusses the stability of various family structures and their impact on child well-being. It also briefly explores the effects of welfare reform on family structure. The research indicates that cohabiting relationships are the most unstable, stepfamilies are no better for child well-being than single-parent homes, and welfare reform is not a significant factor in changing family structures.
