This study reports that employment and earnings of single mothers in Canada and the United States have increased since 1980. The authors suggest single mothers over 40 are better educated than the previous cohort, accounting for the increases in employment and earnings. Welfare reform in both countries may have contributed to increased employment and earnings among younger single mothers.
