This article demonstrates that couples' childbearing histories have an important influence on their risk of experiencing a divorce.  Overall, families with premarital children were found to have considerably higher rates of divorce than other couples, with rates being highest in situations in which the wife has a child fathered by another man.  Conversely, having a common child within marriage was found to reduce divorce risk.
