This paper demonstrates that the delaying effects of high educational attainment on childbearing are less pronounced in East Germany than in West Germany, both before and after unification.  The author suggests that this is due to widely available public daycare in East Germany, which facilitates mothers' return to work and removes some of the economic and labour market costs typically associated with childbearing.
