This paper provides an overview and examination of changes in the age patterns of childbearing in low-fertility countries in the latter half of the twentieth century.  It describes patterns for each decade and the authors conclude that declines in fertility are primarily the result of postponing childbearing and conscious decisions to limit births or remain childless.
