This paper explores the strong correlation between union formation and first birth in Spain.  It finds that entering into a marriage significantly increases the likelihood of conception and birth within the next four years, although that risk is much more limited when couples enter into a cohabiting relationship.  Furthermore, it finds that nonmarital conception is strongly linked to union formation, particularly during pregnancy.
