This paper examines fertility patterns during a period of social and economic upheaval and uncertainty in Central and Eastern Europe after the fall of communism.  It reviews common theories used to explain fertility changes, addresses their inadequacies, and argues that any explanations of fertility must take into account the sharp discontinuity and disorderliness that characterized this period.
