This paper examines the relationship between happiness and having children in men and women in Britain. Based on surveys of British parents, its findings indicate that the relationship between these two factors is complex. It finds that most parents agree that their children make them happy, although women were more likely to do so than men. Parents also acknowledge ways in which children contribute to diminished happiness, although they agree that they have no regrets about having children. Couples without children sometimes perceive children as threatening to their happiness, and couples with an unfulfilled desire for a child agree that this significantly contributes to unhappiness.
