This paper examines the effects of neighbourhood characteristics on child and family well-being.  It suggests that neighbourhoods can acts as 'traps' which isolate people and make it difficult for them to move up.  Neighbourhoods can also act as 'stepping stones' that provide families with important benefits but also pose considerable risks, or as 'springboards' that facilitate upward movement and meet most family needs.
