This paper examines the rising rates of incarceration in the United States, and discusses the impact that this has on family structure.  It suggests that the high incidence of single-parent households in low-income neighbourhoods may be explained, at least in part, by the disproportionate rates of incarceration among disadvantaged, minority men.
