This paper discusses the perceived relationship between family structure and the risk of nonmarital childbearing, and looks at the way that this relationship can be mediated by the age of first sexual encounter.  It suggests that the true relationship may be between family structure and age of first intercourse, and that early intercourse increases the risk of premarital births, as increasing duration of sexual activity heightens the chances of conception.
