This paper examines the motives of couples who are or are not intending to have children and analyses fertility intentions and levels in Turkey and Japan, two countries with very different fertility levels, institutions, and states of social and economic development.  It suggests that children are more economically valuable to parents in some societies than in others which, at least in part, affects fertility and family size decisions.
