This paper examines the potential of increasing contraceptive use and effectiveness to reduce abortion rates around the world.  It links the abortion rate to couples' reproductive wishes, the use of contraception to achieve these wishes, and the likelihood that couples will opt for an abortion to achieve their reproductive preferences.
