This paper studies fertility levels and trends, infant and child mortality rates, and living arrangements in South Africa.  It finds that fertility rates have declined dramatically since the 1960s, that infant mortality rates vary significantly according to location and socioeconomic status, and that a substantial increase in fostering has prevented many children from living as orphans.
