This paper examines fertility patterns in Russia in the period following the fall of the Soviet Union.  It discusses the economic hardship of this period and shows that, during this period, many Russians engaged in additional economic activities and began to cultivate food on private plots of land.  The author finds that, although overall fertility dropped during this period, engagement in activities to generate additional income is positively associated with the birth of a second child.
