This paper examines changes in family structure, fertility, and household composition in Central and Eastern Europe, and examines factors such as increased mobility, an aging population, globalization, and the AIDS pandemic that have contributed to these trends.  The author argues that these trends need to be addressed because they are undermining the family and posing a threat to the effective functioning of society.
