This paper documents trends in world suicide statistics while focusing on the suicide rates in Australia, categorizing them by age, gender, and method. It also looks specifically at the causes of suicide for the ageing population and links factors such as poor mental health, lonliness, loss, grief, and physical illness to suicide attempts by the elderly. Lastly it explores various methods of intervention, treatment and prevention.
