This paper provides evidence that the experience of parental divorce as a child can have a negative effect on individuals' mental health as adults.  However, it suggests that this can be explained, at least in part, by factors that were present in the parental relationship before the dissolution of the marriage.  Therefore, the authors suggest that the negative adult outcomes may have occurred even if the marriage had not ended in divorce.
