This paper examines the effects of China's one-child policy on child well-being.  It finds that this policy contributed to an overall increase in Chinese children's health status, although the majority of these benefits were experienced by boys in families that had children of both genders.  Two key factors found to reduce gender discrimination within families were high household income and maternal education.
