This paper discusses the prevalence and disclosure of domestic violence in the United States and examines the ways in which recent responsible fatherhood initiatives may contribute to domestic violence among women on public assistance.  It suggests that such state and federal policies may trigger violence and abuse, since they place greater stress on custodial and noncustodial parents and compel them to interact with each other.
