This paper examines factors which affect the duration of, and emotional trauma caused by, the abduction of a child by their noncustodial parent. Factors relating to duration were found to be influenced by abductor's preparedness, planning, intent, and ability to prevent the child from being located. Factors relating to emotional harm were associated with child awareness of the situation, the amount of disruption in the child's routine, and the degree of hostility between parents.
