This study of the relationship between family structure and child well-being suggests that negative child outcomes in single-parent families can be partly explained by a decrease in the quality of father-child relationships.  It argues that children in two-parent families are more likely to have close relationships with their fathers than children whose fathers are absent, and suggests that this, more than simple father absence, helps to explain differential child outcomes.
