This paper examines economic well-being and the risk of welfare entry among grandparent-headed households with grandchildren present.  It finds that families with grandparents, grandchildren and no parents are most likely to be poor, but that grandparent-headed families with a single mother present are most likely to receive welfare.  The author suggests that grandparents may not have adequate access to public assistance in situations where they are raising their grandchildren alone.
