This paper examines current knowledge about fatherhood, father involvement in children's lives, and the impact of father involvement on children's cognitive and behavioural outcomes. It also describes variations in father involvement according to residency status, socioeconomic status, ethnicity and cultural factors, and looks at incentives and barriers to paternal engagement. It concludes with a discussion of public policy implications and a framework for measuring future father involvement.
