This paper examines factors which motivate certain countries to adopt job protection legislation.  It argues that such legislation, which generally benefits males, is influenced by the male breadwinner conception, which is significantly shaped by religious beliefs.  The authors use international data to demonstrate that countries with strong Catholic, Muslim and Orthodox influences are more likely to support such values and legislation than are countries which are predominantly Protestant or Atheist.
