This paper highlights significant gaps that remain in the measurement and study of the time families spend together.  It argues that too much attention is paid to individuals within families, and that greater attention needs to be paid to measuring family routines and rituals and understanding their contribution to family identity.  In addition to this, it suggests that more study should be devoted to the analysis of the meaning and quality of family time.
