This paper examines interpersonal, familial and peer factors that affect adolescents' transition from beginning smoker to regular smoker.  Peer smoking, alcohol consumption, depression, and delinquency were found to contribute to regular smoking, while African American ethnicity, school involvement, and strong family ties were strong protective factors against initiation.
