This paper suggests that parents are more likely to help their adult children financially if they feel that their children are dependent on them, or if they feel that their children will be able to reciprocate in the future.  It also demonstrates that parents are less likely to help step-children, suggesting that biological relatedness also contributes to parents' willingness to provide financial assistance.
