This article explores the relationship between parental provision of emotional support during childhood and an individual's health in adulthood.  It finds that children who received little emotional support experience an elevated risk of depression and chronic illness in adulthood.  The authors suggest that emotional support is related to personal control, self-esteem and social relationships in adulthood, all of which affect an individual's health.
