This study explores the relationship between family structure and rates of cognitive, physical and emotional disability among middle-aged adults.  It finds that rates of disability are highest, and functionality lowest, in households in which adults experience the most demands and the least support, such as in single parent households.  The implications of these findings for the transition to old age are also discussed.
