This study examines the method of community-based research on woman abuse used by the Ontario Rural Woman Abuse Study (ORWAS).  This approach sought to empower women rather than to treat them as subjects, to allow individual stories to be made known, and to involve people from the community in the research project.  It concludes that all of these objectives constituted a very successful and beneficial approach to studying this issue.
