This book chapter explores the ways family dynamics contribute to family violence, and it highlights some of the drawbacks of an approach to preventing family violence that focuses primarily on individual-level factors.  It also describes some characteristics of the family that are associated with violence and from which more effective options for primary prevention could be developed.
