This article examines the causes and consequences of police intervention in cases of the abduction of a child by a non-custodial parent.  Specifically, it examines the frequency of police involvement in family abductions, the difference between cases in which the police respond and those in which they do not, the actions taken by police, parents' perception of these actions, and the effect of police intervention on abduction outcomes.
