This paper discusses object relations theory, attachment theory, cognitive behavioural theory, and systems theory - four frameworks which have been used to explain conflicts that arise in adult relationships.  It also describes major sources of stress in relationships and suggests that information on the nature and causes of relationship difficulties should be made readily available to the public so that people will be better equipped to address these problems in their lives.
