This paper researches the effects of parental employment and the use of child-care programs on a child's cognitive development.  It finds that parental employment has a minimal impact on school readiness and cognitive abilities; however, it does suggest that if  the parents have higher levels of education and good parenting skills, the children do receive more benefit from stay-at-home care than from daycare programs.
