This paper investigates current childcare policies in the United Kingdom and explores the relationship between childcare and maternal employment. It suggests that in order to decrease poverty and welfare dependency, both parents should be employed; however, having found that maternal employment is partially dependant on government provision of free or affordable childcare, it recommends that new public policy initiatives be established to address this issue.
