This comparative study of Norway and Italy examines factors which facilitate and hinder maternal employment.  It finds that flexible working arrangements in Norway encourage both childbearing and employment, while a very rigid labour market in Italy discourages both maternal employment and childbearing.  It also finds that, in both countries, women with higher levels of education are more likely to return to work after giving birth than those with low levels of education.
