This paper examines the effects of neighbourhood characteristics such as affluence and poverty, as well as the effects of family characteristics on children's reading and math achievement.  It finds that concentrated poverty and affluence are less important predictors of child outcomes than are median neighbourhood income, family characteristics such as maternal education and household income, and child characteristics such as race and gender.
