This paper explores the dynamics of the school-to-work transition among German youth and considers the effect of family background and household characteristics on youths' career and educational decisions.  It also examines regional differences in youth labour force participation and assesses whether changes to training grants and military policies have affected these transitions.  The author outlines the policy implications of her findings.
