This paper describes the motives for financial saving in Australian households and the form in which savings are generally held.  The authors suggest that such information is important in understanding and predicting the consequences of temporary and permanent changes in the economic circumstances of Australians as a result of, for example, economic downturn or the introduction of a new tax.
