This study suggests that couples in cohabiting relationships experience greater economic hardship than those in married relationships due to the uncertainty about the duration of their.  The author argues that uncertainty about the continuity of their relationship makes cohabiting couples reluctant to invest in household public goods, such as housing and electricity.
