This paper explores household savings in terms of people's conscious decisions to plan for retirement.  It finds that about 30% of people reaching retirement have done little or no planning for it, that the accumulated wealth of these families is significantly less than those of those who planned, and that these households are more likely to experience financial difficulty during retirement.
