This paper discusses gender differences in poverty in the United States, Australia, Canada, France, West Germany, the Netherlands, Sweden, and the United Kingdom.  It also explores the roles played by single motherhood and the welfare state in contributing to or minimizing this inequality.  It finds that rates of poverty are higher among women than among men in every country except Sweden, which leads the authors to suggest that the welfare state can act as a powerful protective factor against female poverty.
