This paper looks at the extent to which elderly individuals benefit economically from co-residing with their children.  It finds that this is much more common among minority, unmarried elders than among married, non-minority ones.  The authors also demonstrate that these living arrangements can act either as an economic burden or an economic advantage for the adult children with whom the elders reside.
