This article examines conditions from early childhood through to high school that influence or predict educational attainment, with particular attention paid to racial and ethnic differences in these indicators.  Indicators discussed include parental education, family income, home computer access, school resources, and teacher qualifications.  Its findings suggest that, in California, black and Hispanic students experience a significant educational disadvantage compared to whites and Asians.
