This study addressed the question of whether or not students' academic achievement is actually enhanced by having a teacher of the same ethnic background as themselves.  It found that this type of matching was beneficial for both black and white students, and warned that although efforts to recruit minority teachers may help minority students, it may actually be detrimental to non-minority students.
