This paper studies grandmothers' involvement in raising and caring for grandchildren, and the effect of this type of non-parental care on children's social and cognitive development and behaviour. The research suggests that children who are raised by grandmothers, or have co-residing grandmothers, fare worse academically, especially in regards to literacy skills, as well as socially and behaviourally.
