This article describes the school performance, social experiences, employment patterns, and independence levels of students with serious emotional disturbances.  It uses information from the National Longitudinal Transition Study of Special Education Students and finds that young people in this group do more poorly than both normal youth and youth with other disabilities.  It also suggests ways to improve their outcomes by providing better services to them, both in high school and as adults.
