This paper looks at the factors which contribute to healthy marriages among low-income couples, who were unmarried when their child was born, but have since married. It finds that mother's race and age, father's employment, and parental marital attitudes and relationship skills significantly affect the likelihood that a couple will marry after the birth of their child. It suggests that the most important contribution to creating healthy stable marriages is marriage and relationship counselling and education.
