This study determines that higher grading standards in elementary school benefit students academically. The authors argue that this is particularly true when low-ability students are placed in classrooms with high-ability students. High-achieving students benefit from stringent grading standards when placed in classrooms with low-achieving students. Data was collected from two cohorts of grades 3-5 students over a three year period.
